PRESS RELEASE
Hybridisation of the Cavaleira Wind Farm: the First Wind Farm in Alentejo
• 31.5 MW wind project combines wind, solar and storage at the same grid connection point and is expected to enter operation in mid-2027.
• Developed in partnership with Vestas and Windpark, this is Hyperion Renewables’ first wind project in Portugal and represents an innovative milestone in the Portuguese renewable energy landscape.
Lisbon – 23 March 2026 – Hyperion Renewables, in partnership with Vestas and Windpark, has announced the start of construction of the Nortada Wind Park, a 31.5 MW project located in Central Alentejo, in Sousel, representing an innovative milestone in Portugal’s renewable energy landscape. Once completed, the wind farm will form part of one of the first fully hybrid projects in Portugal to integrate solar generation, wind power and energy storage simultaneously, reinforcing the role of hybrid solutions in the energy transition and in the integration of renewable energy into the electricity system.
The Nortada Wind Park, the first project in Portugal for Hyperion Renewables, will enable the hybridisation of the grid connection point associated with the Cavaleira Photovoltaic Plant, located in Estremoz and already undergoing hybridisation with a battery energy storage system. This will bring together three technologies within the same grid connection infrastructure. This solution represents a direct optimisation that contributes to more efficient use of the electricity grid and greater flexibility of the energy system by combining complementary technologies at a single connection point, thereby reducing the need for new public infrastructure.
The project will feature seven Vestas V163-4.5 MW turbines, for a total installed capacity of 31.5 MW. Vestas will be responsible for the supply and installation of the turbines, as well as a long-term operations and maintenance agreement, while Windpark will perfom the construction of the wind farm.
“This is a pioneering project in Central Alentejo and a strategic milestone for Hyperion: it is our first wind farm in Portugal and demonstrates that the energy transition can be accelerated through innovative projects,” says Aytea Amandi-Alvarez, CEO of Hyperion Renewables. “By combining wind, solar and storage at the same grid connection point, we strengthen the flexibility and resilience of the electricity system while advancing an innovative and sustainable solution,” she adds.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Hyperion on this landmark hybrid project, which sets a new benchmark for the renewable energy landscape in Portugal. At Vestas, we continue to demonstrate that with the right technology, wind energy can be developed anywhere,” says Tiago Palma Veigas, Head of Vestas for Portugal.
“It is a pleasure to collaborate with two outstanding companies and contribute our expertise to this type of hybrid projects. We are fully committed to initiatives that integrate multiple renewable energy generation systems, optimizing grid connections and reducing environmental impact. Innovation means delivering real solutions to today’s energy challenges — with vision, experience and commitment,” says Mario de Gaviria, CEO of Windpark.
Through this investment, the three companies reinforce their commitment to developing innovative and sustainable energy solutions, contributing to a more resilient electricity system prepared to meet the challenges of the energy transition.
The delivery of the turbines is scheduled for early 2027, with commercial operation expected in mid-2027.
