Axpo, Hyperion start work on subsidy-free PV plant in Portugal

Axpo Portugal, a unit of Switzerland-based Axpo Group, and local Hyperion Renewables have broke ground Monday on a 28.8-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Portugal.

Covering an area of 55 hectares (136 acres) in Evora city, Alentejo region, the PV facility will require investments of EUR 20 million (USD 23.2m), according to the local government.

The Central Fotovoltaica Vale de Moura, as the PV park is named, is the first in the Iberian Peninsula to be developted without public subsidies, said Evora City Council President, Carlos Pinto de Sa.

Slated to be commissioned in 2019, the facility will be generating around 52 GWh of electricity per year. Its output is anticipated to be enough to meet the demand of 10,000 households annually and will be sold under a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Axpo Portugal, the firm noted.
